Pre-Employment Drug Screening

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Drugs change a person’s reaction time, personality, and ability to concentrate. Because of this, it’s no surprise that few employers want to deal with workers who abuse such illegal substances. For the most part, large businesses have policies to cover drug screening employees.

Smaller businesses, however, are more likely to unknowing hire drug users. Because many of these businesses do not require pre-employment drug screening, substance abusers are more likely to apply for positions. According to U.S. Department of Labor statistics 44 percent of illegal drug users work for companies that have less than 25 employees. Another 43 percent work for medium sized businesses, places that employee between 25 to 499 individuals. Only 13 percent of the country’s illegal drug users are able to seek past the drug screening efforts of larger employers.

Video Resumes

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Although many job search websites seem to be pushing video resumes as the newest and fastest way to gain the attention of hiring managers and recruiters, the truth is simple; they aren’t. For most of the population there are too many difficulties to over come in order to create a successful video resume. Aside from camera shyness and technical aspects that must be handled, video resumes demand a sort of charisma that many simply do not possess.

And those who do possess it often run the risk of coming across as overly sure of themselves. Unlike a job interview where one is able to judge the face of others to tailor their answers, video resumes leave the applicant without the feedback and traditional interview offers. Because of this, there is no way to correct easily misconstrued statements. The impression a hiring manager gets from and applicants video resume maybe the only one they have a chance to leave.

Internship Prep

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Although spending a semester working for little to no money is not most people’s idea of the best way to spend their time, internships pay off in the long run. As more companies begin to hire full-time employees from their past interns, obtaining a position in one of these programs can put a student on the fast track to success. The real problem comes in trying to determine if one can afford this experience without skipping on paying the rent.

Because of this financial conundrum, summer time is the most popular part of the year for internships. If a student forgoes taking classes for the season, many find that they have time needed to work both a part time job and handle the extra load of an internship. By devoting the time they would spend on their studies to an internship, most students do not experience as much stress as they would if they participated in such a program at a different time during the year.

San Antonio Jobs

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

The September unemployment statistics for San Antonio, Texas show that there was a small rise in the number of individuals who were unable to find work during the month. Figures rose from 4 percent to 4.1 percent, which is still lower than the state average of 4.4 percent or the national average of 4.5 percent. Despite a small rise in the jobless, these statistics actually show signs of a more positive economic future for San Antonio on the immediate horizon.

According to a report released by Alamo WorkSource, these and other figures showed that the area’s economy was beginning to stabilize. When the unemployment rate’s only small rise is looked at alongside the fact that 5,700 new San Antonio jobs were created in the month of September, one can see that the jobless rate increase was most likely a result of population growth.

San Francisco’s Unemployment Rate

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

The unemployment rate in San Francisco dropped significantly between the months of August and September, from 6.7 to 4.2 percent. As schools throughout the city re-open their doors, many of those without employment for the summer season are able to return to work. Although the lower jobless rate shows some month-to-month improvement, the statistics aren’t as positive as those of previous years.

Last September only 3.7 percent of the city’s population were without work. This year’s unemployment increase can, for the most part, be blamed on the current housing situation. With real estate sales experiencing a slump, both the construction and mortgage industries have been unable to offer as many San Francisco jobs as they have in previous years.

After ending their service in the military, many veterans find themselves without employment. Although in the ultimate situation, a soldier is able to obtain a new job before their term of service ends, this often does not happen. Time constraints and other obligations can easily get in the way. Because of this, leave the military without knowing where there next pay check will be coming from.

The issue with finding good jobs for veterans is often location. Many positions, such as a vast majority of those that require top secret security clearance, only exist in abundance in a few places, such as Washington, D.C. Other veteran jobs in this category involve government contract work that often requires traveling, possibly to the middle east. If one is willing to relocate and not opposed to the possibility of spending time out of the country, then those with up to date security clearances should have no problem finding employment.
