Nevada State Jobs in Manufacturing Decline

Thousands of Nevada state jobs in the manufacturing industry were lost during the last year.

The 2010 Nevada Manufacturers Directory from Manufacturers’ News, Inc. found that industrial employment in Nevada decreased by 6.2 percent from October 2008 to October 2009. The state lost 3,970 industrial jobs and 115 manufacturing companies during that time.

That’s the biggest decrease in manufacturing jobs Nevada has seen since the report began keeping track seven years ago. The state is now home to 1,905 manufacturing companies employing 59,775 workers.

Nashville Construction Jobs See Biggest Yearly Decline

When compared to last year, more Nashville construction jobs were lost during October than jobs in any other industry.

During October, the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 9.2 percent to 9.1 percent, following a decrease from 9.7 percent during September. The area’s current rate is lower than the national unemployment rate at the time of 10.2 percent.

The Nashville area had a total non-farm employment of 727,500 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 728,300 workers during September and a 3.8 percent decrease from last year.

State of Oregon Jobs in Forestry Remain Strong

Despite a decrease in the timber market, the forestry industry is still responsible for creating hundreds of thousands of State of Oregon jobs.

A recent report from the National Alliance of Forest Owners found that private forest logging is responsible for more than 120,000 jobs in Oregon. Overall, private lands account for about 80 percent of timber Harvest in Oregon.

The Oregon Forest Resources Institute notes that about one-third of forests in the state are privately owned and the rest are considered federal land. Large, industrial landholders account for about 6 million acres, while small woodland owners account for about 4.7 million acres.

Milwaukee Jobs Loss Among Worst in Nation

The number of Milwaukee jobs (Click here) lost during the last year ranks the city among the worst in the country.

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that the Milwaukee area has lost 50,700 jobs, or 5.92 percent of the city’s employment, since last year. The report ranked the Milwaukee area 30th in the country for percentage of jobs lost and 20th in the country for the actual number of jobs lost.

During the last year, only three markets managed to add more than 1,000 jobs. The McAllen-Edinburg area in Texas added 4,400 jobs, followed by the Kennewick-Pasco area in Washington, adding 3,400 jobs, and Ocean City, N.J., adding 2,700 jobs.

Portland Medical Jobs to See Biggest Growth

Portland medical jobs and healthcare positions throughout the State of Oregon will account for the majority of employment growth through 2018.

The Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton area’s education and health services industry employed 137,100 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 134,100 workers during September and a .6 percent increase from last year.

According to the Oregon Employment Department, the state as a whole is expected to add more than 160,000 jobs between 2008 and 2018, accounting for an increase of 9 percent. This is similar to the 165,000 jobs, or 10 percent, growth seen during the previous decade.
