5 Unusual Constructions

It’s creators faced a lot of criticism due to its extravagance and overwhelming cost.  It is now called the O2 and includes a variety of different attractions inside and is a very recognisable and well known modern landmark in London.

The Gherkin

The Gherkin is formally known as St Mary Axe.  It is a very unusual shape and stands out in the centre of London.  It has generated both positive and negative comments and reviews from within the construction industry.  The Gherkin is a really exciting and business savvy place to work.  It has great sky gardens and a stunning restaurant.

The European Southern Observatory Hotel, Chile.

This building is primarily used as a place for astronomers to stay while they are working in the Atacama desert.  It incorporates stunning design and is situated on a breathtaking landscape.   The project was managed by engineers Mayr and Ludescher.  The buildings position enables good conditions for astronomical observations due to the fact that there is less air and moisture in the air to refract incoming light.

This building was used to film several scenes in the 22nd James bond film.  It is very recognisable and added to the futuristic set of the film.

Beijjing National Stadium, Beijing.

This stadium was designed so that it could host the 2008 summer Olympics.  Consequently, it is situated in the Olympic Green and was a focal point of the Olympic ceremony.   The Beijing National Stadium is actually the world’s largest steel structure and was designed by architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, artist Ai Weiwei and Li Xingang who was the chief architect.

This building required a very complicated construction process due to its huge steel bars and outwards appearance.

Sydney Opera House

This is a very modern building that is set in a beautiful location.  The building overlooks the harbour at its lighting looks stunning at night.   The Opera House is made up of creative curved shapes and spherical roofs.

The building is used for a variety of performing arts shows and training.  It was made a World Heritage site in 2007 and is a very popular tourist attraction not only because of its entertaining shows but also its complex architecture.  The building is so large that it has 6 venues that can be utilised for different things.  The two largest and most popular rooms are the Opera Theatre and Concert Hall.

A Rough Guide to Investment Banking Jobs

Investment banking jobs are one of the most financially rewarding areas that a graduate can go into after leaving university. They may not be easy but with the challenges of the work comes a great deal of prestige – and perhaps most importantly, a comparable salary.
Generally speaking, to be a viable candidate for a job in investment banking, you’ll need to be a graduate. You’ll also need to be a fairly high performing graduate; most investment banks will only consider you if have achieved at least a 2:1 honours degree. The biggest, most prestigious banks at the top end of the market are among the fiercest competitors for first class graduates, so the better your degree the better your prospects in netting an entry level position in investment banking.
One of the most important things to understand about a career in investment banking though is that it’s not just one type of job. It’s several different roles, from trading to tax consultancy to market research, asset management or even further into the so-called ‘back office’ roles of human resources or marketing. Consequently, these jobs draw upon a wide variety of skills and many different degrees will be considered by investment banking employers.
Of course, the trading and quantitative positions in investment banking are mainly looking for graduates who have studied a degree with a substantial mathematical element to them – generally bachelor of science (Bsc) courses. Obvious candidates include economics, mathematics, accounting & finance or business studies. However, they’ll also consider you if you’ve studied less obvious degrees such as physics, chemistry, or engineering.
Other areas will be looking for a more varied selection of candidates though. The corporate finance and sales divisions of an investment bank, for example, will be looking for any graduates who have demonstrated commitment to their studies and dedication to their work. Marketing, Geography, English, Politics – if you’ve excelled, you’ll be welcome in any bank.
Working in investment banking isn’t something you should embark upon lightly though. The rewards are high – but so are the responsibilities. If you’re after a standard nine to five or if you don’t like being placed under extreme pressure, then this isn’t the career for you. Whilst you’ll generally be expected to work a set number of hours on a regular basis, depending on the contracts you’re working on you’ll be expected to work as long as it takes to meet the deadlines for each client.
Of course there are benefits to make up for this. Whilst starting wages have dropped considerably in recent years – once it was common to enter a role with a starting salary of £32k-40k – and the initial £15k salary is less appealing, investment banking is a job with huge prospects. Nearly every role in either the ‘front’, ‘middle’, and ‘back’ offices will qualify for bonuses throughout the year – and they can run from 50% to 150% of the base salary even in the first year if you work well.
Plus past the first year you’ll hopefully be on your way up the career ladder, where the prospects are even better.

Big 4 Firms Top Businessweek’s Best Places To Launch A Career

This month BusinessWeek revealed its list of the best places to launch a career. Once again the Big 4 firms took home the top four spots on the list. To prepare the ranking, “BusinessWeek polled 60 college career services directors across the country; collected data from a survey of 60,000 U.S. undergrads by Universum USA, a Philadelphia research company; and required employers to submit statistics on everything from pay and benefits to training programs and retention.”

The article sites the level of responsibility given to new hires, opportunity for advancement and learning opportunities as some of the top reasons why working for one of the Big 4 is so beneficial.

While this is great news, the article also contained some cautionary advice. As is expected, hiring is down greatly and competition is greater than ever before:

“Getting a job in the first place is no slam dunk. Many companies have been cutting back on entry-level hiring—one survey of 2009 college grads found that only 1 out of 5 who applied for a job succeeded in landing one—and the employers in our ranking are no different. Entry-level hiring in the first half of the year was down across the board, with at least 50 of the 69 employers who took part in our survey reporting an average decrease of more than 20%.

When A Little Black Dress Can Be A Big Black Hole …

Dress code is always a sensitive topic and as summer approaches, the tension caused by the difference in male and female dress requirements can become acute.  Many employers allow women to dress in sandals and strappy dresses, but men are still uncomfortably trapped in formal business wear.

Add religious beliefs and disability to the dress code discussion and it becomes clear that the subject of what employees should and shouldn’t wear to work is a difficult one.

A formal dress code creates clarity for both employer and employee as to what standards are expected.  Where the employees meet customers, the benefits of presentable appearance are obvious. Even where the employee’s work is internal, a dress code can help to:

  • create a team atmosphere,
  • encourage standards of professionalism,
  • create a corporate image.

Let’s take a look at the three main areas where discrimination can arise, starting with gender discrimination.  Some years ago, Matthew Thompson (Jobcentre Plus employee who worked in Manchester), successfully complained of sex discrimination because male employees at Jobcentre Plus were required to wear a collar and tie.  Female employees were allowed to dress more informally.

In matters of male and female dress code, the decision as to whether one gender is being treated less favourably than the other will not be based on an item-by-item comparison, but judged on the overall standard required.  This level of formality required must be the same for each gender, but can be made up differently; for example, men may be required to wear a shirt and tie, whilst women may be required to wear business suits or tailored separates…

If the employer adopts this approach, then neither gender is treated less favourably.

A dress code that requires employees to act in a way contrary to their religious beliefs risks being indirectly discriminatory.  So a dress code forbidding headgear will be discriminatory to male Sikhs, who must wear a turban.  However, the recent decision of the Court of Appeal in Eweida v British Airways shows that there is not an unfettered right to express one’s religious belief.  BA had a dress code policy, which refused visible jewellery to customer facing staff.  Ms Eweida, a committed Christian, attended for work wearing a corss on serval occasions and was asked to conceal it.  Eventually she refused and was sent home.  She complained, unsuccessfully, that she had been discriminated against on the grounds of her religion. 

The Court rejceted her appeal because the detriment of which Ms Eweida complained was only suffered by her.  Her complaint arose from a personal objection, which was not based  on requirements of her faith.  Nor did the dress code interfere with her ability to observe her faith.  The concern had never been raised by any of the other 130,000 BA employees.

From male police officers with pony tails and classroom assistants wishing to wear full face veils, to the British Airways cross case, employers must ensure that their dress code is drawn up to avoid the various discrimination law pitfalls.

Actions for employers:

  • Employers can prescribe a dress code that is appropriate for the work involved, e.g. for safety and hygiene reasons.
  • Employers can require staff who come into contact with the public or other organisations to conform to a dress code, which will enhance the public image of the employer and facilitate its business.
  • Employers must act reasonably, balance the needs of the business with the rights of employees, and get the principles of the code right so that it genuinely reflects a business need, and is neither arbitrary nor discriminatory.
  • The dress code needs to be spelt out in a clear policy, which is transparent and understood by all.
  • The code must be enforced in a consistent and proportionate way.

Standing and sitting up straight and having a firm handshake will assert your capability and confidence. This is even important while waiting in the lobby for the interview to begin as you should give off an upbeat impression that will outwardly convey that you are pleased to interview with a potential employer. Keeping your hands together with your fingers interlocked communicates nonverbally that an individual has self confidence and is comfortable. Similar natural and meaningful gestures should be the only ones utilized during an interview while excessive aggressive gestures should be limited.</p> <p>Listening is conveyed through eye contact and is a major aspect in an interview setting.
