Austin Employment Scene
By admin | October 11, 2007
Texas’ overall unemployment rate fell 0.8 percent within the last month. In June 4.9 percent of individuals state wide were without work. The creation of new jobs in certain areas such as Austin helped lower the statistic to this month’s 4.1 percent. Because of this the state is currently number one in employment gains.
With the addition of 1,500 new Austin jobs, the cities unemployment rate is lower than the state average. At this time only 3.2 percent of people living in Austin are unable to find to find employment.
With new legislation likely to be passed which is in the favor of jobseekers, this statistic stands a good chance of continuing to improve. Environment Texas, an Austin based non-profit organization, is pushing for a 20 percent increase in renewable energy sources by the year 2020.
According to a study the group recently released, this would create 17,630 new jobs a year in Texas alone, many of which would be in Austin.
According to J.J Karabias, the federal field organizer for Environment Texas, “Turning on renewable in Texas would cut energy costs not only for individual families but for small businesses and large energy users. At the same time, increasing our renewable energy would help clean up air pollution and make a down payment in the fight against global warming.”
Not only would this legislation bring a large number of new jobs to area every year; it will bring in approximately $550 million to Texas land owners who allow their property to be used to for renewable energy source production. Other benefits from this plan will include an overall savings of $1.75 billion in residential energy bills.
Nationally this would create 185,000 new jobs and save residential property owners over $10.5 billion in utilities bills.
With an increase in jobs, a decrease in energy bills and more money in the area, the passing of this legislation in the House of Representatives would be mean good things for Austin and the rest of Texas.
