Dallas Construction Jobs Supported by New Hotel Project

The construction of a new hotel will support many Dallas construction jobs.

Magnolia Lodging Development is planning to build a new Home 2 Suites by Hilton on 3 acres of land near Stonebriar Centre Mall in Frisco, a suburb located about 28 miles from Dallas. The development company is locally-based.

The new four-story project will be located near State Highway 121 and Parkwood Boulevard. Although the exact details of the development and construction costs were not released, Home 2 hotels generally cost anywhere from $12 million to $15 million to develop, according to the Dallas Business Journal.

San Antonio Construction Jobs Created by Denver Company

Catamount Constructors Inc. recently announced its plan to open a new office in San Antonio during January 2011. The new location will allow the Denver-based company to hire more employees and better serve its growing client base of firms in the Southwest.

The company will most likely hire applicants for Texas sales jobs and other office positions, as well as construction workers and other labor-related positions. Applicants may have to take Texas background checks.

Construction Jobs in Fort Lauderdale Decline

Thousands of construction jobs in Fort Lauderdale have been lost during the last year.

A recent report from the Associated General Contractors of America found that Fort Lauderdale lost 4,000 construction jobs – a decrease of 11 percent – when compared to last year. Other areas in South Florida continued to lose construction workers as well.

West Palm Beach lost 4,400 construction workers, a decrease of 16 percent, while Miami lost 1,700 construction jobs, a decrease of 5 percent. Florida as a whole saw its construction industry drop 18,600 employees over the year.

Texas Construction Jobs Hit the Hardest

As the state’s unemployment rate increased and jobs were lost on a monthly and yearly basis during December 2009, Texas construction jobs saw the biggest decline when compared to the previous year.

During December 2009, Texas’s unemployment rate increased from 8 percent to 8.3 percent, following a decrease from 8.3 percent during November. Despite the increase, the state’s unemployment rate is still lower than the national rate of 10 percent.

Texas had a total non-farm employment of 10,355,300 workers during December, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 10,379,200 workers during November and a 2.6 percent decrease from December 2008.

Nashville Construction Jobs See Biggest Yearly Decline

When compared to last year, more Nashville construction jobs were lost during October than jobs in any other industry.

During October, the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 9.2 percent to 9.1 percent, following a decrease from 9.7 percent during September. The area’s current rate is lower than the national unemployment rate at the time of 10.2 percent.

The Nashville area had a total non-farm employment of 727,500 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 728,300 workers during September and a 3.8 percent decrease from last year.
