The number of Milwaukee jobs (Click here) lost during the last year ranks the city among the worst in the country.

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that the Milwaukee area has lost 50,700 jobs, or 5.92 percent of the city’s employment, since last year. The report ranked the Milwaukee area 30th in the country for percentage of jobs lost and 20th in the country for the actual number of jobs lost.

During the last year, only three markets managed to add more than 1,000 jobs. The McAllen-Edinburg area in Texas added 4,400 jobs, followed by the Kennewick-Pasco area in Washington, adding 3,400 jobs, and Ocean City, N.J., adding 2,700 jobs.

Overall, 361 of the 369 labor markets in the United States lost jobs between October 2008 and October of this year. Six metro areas lost more than 100,000 jobs during the year, including New York City, which lost 218,200 positions; Los Angeles, which lost 203,000 jobs; and Chicago, which lost 197,800 jobs. Atlanta, Detroit and Phoenix also lost more than 100,000 jobs.

When it comes to the percentage of jobs lost among all areas, Kokomo, Ind., took the biggest hit, seeing an 8.31 percent decrease in employment since October 2008. Following were Monroe, Mich., and Dalton, Ga., both with an 8.13 percent decrease in employment.

Phoenix saw the biggest percentage decline in jobs among major markets, as 7.28 percent of the city’s employment was lost during the last year. Detroit saw the second-worst percentage decline in a major market, losing 7.19 percent of its employment during the 12-month period.

As for the highest recent unemployment figures, El Centro, Calif., had a 30 percent unemployment rate during October, followed by Yuma, Ariz., with a 23.5 percent unemployment rate. Detroit had the highest unemployment rate of any major market at 16.7 percent. A total of 124 markets had unemployment rates of at least 10 percent during October.
