Increasing holiday sales should create more sales jobs in Phoenix (Click here) this year.

A recent report from the National Retail Federation is predicting that holiday sales will increase once again this year, allowing retailers to hire hundreds of thousands of seasonal workers, which is great news for the millions of unemployment people throughout the U.S.

The NRF is predicting that holiday sales will increase by 2.8 percent to $465.6 billion this year. The projected increase is considered average compared to last year’s sales growth of 5.2 percent.

“Retailers are optimistic that a combination of strong promotions and lean inventory levels will help them address consumer caution this holiday season,” Matthew Shay, president and CEO of NRF, said in a statement. “While businesses remain concerned over the viability of the economic recovery, there is no doubt that the retail industry is in a better position this year to handle consumer uncertainty than it was in 2008 and 2009.”

Although retail sales have increased for the last 14 months in a row, consumers are still concerned about the stock market, higher gas and food prices, fiscal policy, and stagnant job growth – all of which could impact holiday spending this year.

“Just when you think the U.S. economy is turning around, another factor comes into play that changes the game,” NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz, Ph.D., said. “Persistently high unemployment, an erratic stock market, modest income growth and rising consumer prices are all combining to impact spending this holiday season. How Americans will react to shaky economic data is the question, but the good news for retailers is that shoppers have not yet thrown in the towel.”

The projected increase in sales should push retailers to hire anywhere between 480,000 and 500,000 seasonal workers this holiday season, which is similar to the 495,000 seasonal workers hired last year.

“The hundreds of thousands of jobs created during the holiday season help people support their families by supplementing their household income and providing generous employee discounts,” Shay said. “As the retail industry bounces back from the recession and continues to add jobs, some holiday employees could find themselves with an opportunity for even more: a new career in one of the most innovative industries on the planet.”

Hundreds of furniture sales jobs Florida will be lost as a popular retailer closes its doors.

Robb & Stucky recently filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and will now be sold to Hudson Capital Partners, a professional liquidation firm. The company cited the economic recession, continuing high unemployment, and a low demand for housing for its financial troubles.

The high-end furniture retailer currently operates 20 stores throughout Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada – all of which will now close because of this deal. Robb & Stucky also operates a number of distribution, warehousing, and logistics centers throughout the country.

The company currently employs about 756 employees, including 178 people at its headquarters in Fort Meyers. A total of 380 employees, including all of those at the company headquarters, 13 in Boca Raton, 12 in Palm Beach, and some jobs Fort Lauderdale are scheduled to be laid off by April 23rd.

According to an article by the South Florida Business Journal, Robb & Stucky was founded 96 years ago and has become known for its high-end furniture selection. The company had revenues of $139.7 million during 2010 and $83.3 million for the seven months ending on January 31st.

“For nearly a century, customers have turned to Robb & Stucky for its unparalleled collection of fine furnishings,” Jim Schaye, CEO of Hudson Capital Partners, said in a statement.

The store’s closing is bad news for the local economy, which is finally beginning to recover from the lingering effects of the economic downturn.

During February, Florida’s unemployment rate dropped from 11.9 percent to 11.5 percent, after decreasing from 12 percent during January. However, the state’s rate is still much higher than the national average of 8.9 percent.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Florida employed a total of 7,184,200 workers during February, which is up from 7,161,500 workers during January and a .5 percent increase from last year.

Wondering what sales careers Dallas has to offer? You may want to consider the recovering automobile industry.

The Freeman Auto Report found that sales of new cars and trucks in North Texas increased by 8.4 percent during 2010. That growth in sales, along with more increases expected this year, is supporting the creation of more employment opportunities in the industry.

The report found that sales in Dallas County were up by 14.7 percent, while sales in Collin County grew by 17.1 percent, but both of those increases were offset by single-digit growth in Denton and Tarrant counties.

The 8.4 percent growth in new automobile sales may seem low compared to the increase seen in other spots throughout the nation. However, Texas as a whole fared better than the rest of the country throughout the recession, so local car sales had less of a downturn to recover from.

“We were mainly looking for evidence of growth, and we got it,” Lee Chapman, president of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan New Car Dealers Association, told The Dallas Morning News. “The last quarter was trending up, and I think everyone feels pretty good about 2011.”

Nationwide, car dealers sold about 11.6 million vehicles last year, which is an 11 percent increase from 2009. Experts predict that the auto industry will sell a total of 12.5 million to 13 million vehicles this year and 14 million vehicles after 2012.

Despite a statewide increase in employment, Connecticut sales jobs may not be able to provide the greatest amount of security for the time being.

With the stability of the national economy questionable at the moment, many are holding on to their hard earned cash with a tighter fist. Because of this, retailers aren’t finding it necessary to employ as many salespeople as they have in previous years.

Nevertheless, the industry is not suffering as badly as it was several months prior. State labor economist John Tirinzonie believes the fact that many residents have begun to receive their federal rebate checks might have “played a part” in boosting the troubled retail industry.

At this time there are no statistics to support or disprove this theory. If Tirinzonie is correct, then there may be a small increase in sales jobs in Connecticut as shoppers begin to tentatively test the waters of consumerism again. Still, he is not overly hopeful, saying that, “We should be cautious that high energy costs are taxing a frail economy, and that could translate into bad news over the next several months.” The retail industry is usually the first to take such a hit.

Overall, Connecticut employment grew by 2,900 jobs in May, according to a recent report released by the state Department of Labor. This means that total non-agricultural employment was at 1,701,800. This increase came after four consecutive months of employers shedding jobs and brings the total damage down to 4,700 positions lost this year from 7,600 in April.

The industries that added the most jobs were trade, transportation and utilities, education and health services, and business and professional services.

Despite the increase in the number of jobs in Connecticut, the unemployment rate jumped from April’s 4.7 percent to 5.4 percent in May, which is just below the national average.
