Layoffs Making Impact on Dallas Employment
By admin | December 13, 2007
As the housing market continues it’s less than desirable state, working American’s are effected. The first one’s to bare the burn were real estate agents who live almost solely off of commissions earned through the sale of new and existing properties.
Next to follow were those employed by mortgage and lending firms. As fewer individuals sought to purchase new homes, many lenders reduced their staff numbers in hopes of cutting corners in an effort to be more profitable. Also effected by the housing slump have been construction workers and home manufactures.
The latest victims of the housing market are approximately 100 Dallas jobs. Recently home improvement retailer Home Depot announced that they would be closing three call centers located in various parts of the country in an effort to increase profitability.
With few individuals purchasing new homes, such businesses as Home Depot have taken a direct hit to their finances. These call centers which will be closing aided the company’s home service business by assisting over the phone in the installation of products such as doors and windows.
The largest of the centers effected is located in Tampa, Florida. Where 751 individuals will soon find themselves unemployed. In Texas, there will be a loss of 100 Dallas jobs, as the company tries to be more completive with similar stores such as Lowe’s. Home Depot is also closing it’s call center in Chicago, where another 100 employees are to be laid off.
Instead of having several call centers available to assist customers, the company now hopes to make the installation process more efficient by “giving the customer one local point of contact with the store instead of multiple ones”, according to Home Depot spokesperson Ron DeFeo.
Those who will be losing their Dallas jobs have already been informed of such. Home Depot plans to aid those being laid off by setting up local jobs fairs.
