Florida Job Search

As the calendar inches closer to summer break, many Florida teachers are beginning to worry about where they will be working in the fall. Due to state budget cuts and decreased enrollment, many area schools will not be able to provide as many jobs in Florida for teachers as they have in the past. The majority of the cuts in employment are expected to take place in some of the state’s largest school districts.
Despite the decrease in the number of teachers that will be needed, state education officials say there are still at least 17,000 Florida jobs for teachers that have yet to be filled. Although this may sound like a considerable number, it is down quite a bit from the 32,000 teachers hired in 2006. In many of the state’s cities school districts have been some of the top employers in the area. For example, the Orange County school system, which employees more than 23,000 individuals, is responsible for providing more Florida jobs than any other employer in the region other than Walt Disney World.
According to Sean Snaith, director of the Institute for Economic Competition at the University of Central Florida, the decrease in teachers needed for the coming school year is a direct reflection of what is happening to the economy. Snaith says that once the housing market recovers, educators will find that more Florida jobs will be available to them.
It is possible that fewer available jobs in other industries have driven families out of Florida to search for employment elsewhere. This would easily explain why thirty-eight of Florida’s sixty-seven school districts saw decreased enrollment over the last year.
