Jobs in Indianapolis

There is good and bad news for people of Indianapolis, Indiana. The unemployment rate is down to 5 percent, from the 5.1 percent of September, according to a press release made by the Indiana Workforce Development on November 22, 2006. There has also been a gain of somewhere around 123,100 jobs in the last decade, in large part due to the opening of many small and medium sized businesses.

On the other hand, there are approximately thirty-seven thousand individuals residing in Indianapolis who are currently without employment. With Diamler-Chrysler of Kokomo announcing last Tuesday that they maybe laying off 16 percent of current employees, approximately 7,000 individuals, at their transmission plants, many are concerned about the employment outlook of the city. Area analysts say the Diamler-Chrysler situation is simply part of an ongoing trend.

Along with layoffs, many Indianapolis jobs in the area that do not require specialized training or a college education are being outsourced to cheaper venues overseas. So what exactly does this mean for local jobseekers?

Individuals with occupations in the categories of construction, manufacturing, insurance (all types), and real estate may run into problems when searching for employment. That’s not to say that there will not be opportunities to be had in the area for such professionals, but that the job market may be more competitive than usual, due to saturation of individuals seeking employment.

If one wants to continue in these lines of work, it would be to their best advantage to revamp resumes and work on their interviewing skills. With fewer jobs, the most qualified individuals will get first choice. That makes this a great time to start concentrating on how to convince a prospective employer that one is in that top group.

If one already has a position with a company in one of the aforementioned fields, this is not the time to quit in search of better employment opportunities. It might be best for one to hold on to their current position, at least until after the first quarter employment statistics are in.

The outlook for those who have chosen careers in finance and accounting is promising. This group saw the largest percent rise in the last year. Things continue to look up for those in Indianapolis in these professions, with many employers planning on adding a number of positions in the first quarter of 2007.

Over all, the employment situation throughout Indiana seems to be fairly good, with the greatest changes coming in the areas mentioned. Other groups such as educational and health services, professional and business services, trade, transportation, and utilities, along with government services have seen or are expected to see little to no changed in employment trends.
