More jobs in Seattle were added during June even as the city’s unemployment rate continued to climb.
During June, the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area’s unemployment rate increased from 8.2 percent to 8.5 percent, which is up from 8 percent during April. In spite of those decreases, the area’s rate is still lower than the national average of 9.5 percent.
The Seattle area had a total non-farm employment of 1,398,000 workers during June, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 1,387,900 workers during May and only a .9 percent decrease from last year.
Only two industries lost jobs between May and June, including the government industry, which decreased by 900 jobs, and the education and health services industry, which declined by 600 jobs.
Employment in the financial activities industry remained even over the month with 77,400 jobs, while employment in the mining and logging industry remained even over the month and year with 800 jobs.
Every other industry saw a monthly increase in employment, including: leisure and hospitality by 3,000 jobs; professional and business services by 1,900 jobs; manufacturing by 1,700 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities by 1,700 jobs; construction by 1,600 jobs; information by 900 jobs; and other services by 800 jobs.
Six industries managed to see a yearly increase in employment during June, including:
- Trade, transportation and utilities by 1.5 percent
- Education and health services by 1.3 percent
- Information by .5 percent
- Government by .4 percent
- Professional and business services by .3 percent
- Other services by .2 percent
Industries that experienced a yearly decrease in employment include: Construction by 16.2 percent; financial activities by 5.7 percent; manufacturing by 1.5 percent; and leisure and hospitality by 1.2 percent.
