Tips to Post Your Resume Online

By admin | December 20, 2007

Posting a resume online provides you with quick access to hundreds of great companies and organizations so you can conduct your job search more effectively. But posting your resume is only effective and safe if you follow a few simple rules and protect your personal information.

Exposure of your job experience and qualifications on the Internet also exposes much of your personal information to millions of people. If you’re not careful, this information can be used in ways that put you at risk – identify theft is just one of those ways. Following some safety rules in order to protect your privacy is well worth the time and investment it takes. Using the internet wisely can enhance your job search, but you need to do it in a way that protects you.

And you need to remember that once you post your resume online, it is possible that your current employer will see it too, so be prepared to respond if questions arise!

Use discretion with personal information included in an online resume. Your resume is available to millions of people and not all of them are viewing your resume to help you find a job. Some people are seeking information to build a database for telemarketing or other sales tactics. Some employers will forward them to colleagues or other people, and you never know where your resume might end up – even on the desk of your current boss!

The following guidelines will help you protect your privacy and increase your chances of landing the right job:

  1. Be sure that the sites you use are protected with a firewall - this information is included on their site. It is extremely important for you not to include personal information such as your telephone number and home address. You should consider establishing a post office box and a separate email address used just for job searches. And be careful to use an email address that is professional. An address such as partydude@.xxx.com is not a good idea! Always think about the impression you’ll leave.
  2. There are many online recruiters who specialize in online job searches and they can be very helpful in determining where to post your resume. Do your homework and research their validity and credibility.
  3. Date your resume since many sites keep older resumes online after your job search is complete. You don’t want a current employer to think you are still looking. You also may want to keep your resume updated if you allow it to remain online.
  4. There are several websites which specialize in enhancing your job search. These sites ensure that your information is protected and they reduce the possibility of your information being stolen and sold for other purposes. Sites such as Monster.com have strict privacy and information sharing policies. Be sure to evaluate a site’s privacy policies before you post your resume.

Online resume posting is a great way to supplement and enhance your job search efforts. You should evaluate and understand the risks associated with exposing your personal information to the internet and take appropriate steps to minimize that risk as much as possible.

By protecting your privacy and personal information when posting your resume online, you can utilize this strategy to your advantage. Taking protective measures to ensure your information cannot be used inappropriately will be worth the extra time and effort.

The power of the Web is enormous when you use it wisely.
