Houston Manufacturing Jobs Cut by BAE Systems

BAE Systems Ltd. recently announced that it will layoff about 600 employees at the company’s facility in Sealy, which is located about an hour outside of Houston. The cuts are being made in response to reduced defense budgets and fewer long-standing contracts, customer requirements, and production volumes.

The job cuts, which are expected to take place through June, will bring BAE’s local workforce to about 1,200 people. Employees who are affected by the layoffs will be eligible for a severance package, able to apply for other positions within the company, and offered support from the Texas Workforce Commission.

Phoenix AZ Jobs Supported by Law School Move

A number of Phoenix AZ jobs will be supported as a successful law school moves downtown.

The Phoenix School of Law recently announced its plans to relocate to the One North Central building in downtown Phoenix. That move will benefit the local economy by bringing several long-term, high-paying jobs to the downtown area.

“Phoenix School of Law’s announcement to relocate to downtown is great news, bringing long-term jobs that benefit the entire city,” Mayor Phil Gordon said in a statement. “By continuing to build on our knowledge based economy, we strengthen our workforce and create opportunities to reinvest in our community.”

San Diego Healthcare Jobs Second in Yearly Growth

San Diego healthcare jobs and education positions saw the second-largest yearly employment growth last month, second only to professional and business services roles.

During March, California’s unemployment rate dropped from 12.1 percent to 12 percent, which is the lowest rate the state has seen since September 2009. The San Diego area had an unemployment rate of 10.1 percent during February.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos area employed a total o1,233,200 workers during March, which is up from 1,222,900 workers during February and a 2 percent increase from last year.

Denver Colorado Jobs Recognized for Seafood Sustainability

A handful of grocery stores that support Denver Colorado jobs (Click here) are being recognized for their seafood sustainability efforts.

Greenpeace International recently released the Supermarket Seafood Sustainability Scorecard as part of the organization’s “Casting Away the Oceans” report. The scorecard is aimed at identifying supermarkets that are doing their part to sustain the world fish population.

The Kroger Company – which operates many stores throughout Colorado, supporting City Market and King Soopers jobs – was named 15th on the list. Safeway, which is one of the largest grocery stores in the state, was ranked first, while Costco was ranked 11th and Walmart was ranked 13th.

Sarasota Jobs With Small Businesses Ranked Low

Sarasota jobs (Click here) with small businesses are not as lucrative as they used to be.

The Business Journals recently ranked the Sarasota area 64th on its list of 2011 Small Business Rankings. The city received a small business vitality score of -2.915, meaning it’s not considered a great place for a small business to start and grow.

The Sarasota area had 20,288 small businesses as of 2008, but the city saw its private-sector employment drop by 15.49 percent between 2005 and 2010, as its population grew by 6.03 percent between 2004 and 2009. That means the city was losing jobs as more people were moving to the area.

Furniture Sales Jobs Florida Lost

Hundreds of furniture sales jobs Florida will be lost as a popular retailer closes its doors.

Robb & Stucky recently filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and will now be sold to Hudson Capital Partners, a professional liquidation firm. The company cited the economic recession, continuing high unemployment, and a low demand for housing for its financial troubles.

The high-end furniture retailer currently operates 20 stores throughout Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada – all of which will now close because of this deal. Robb & Stucky also operates a number of distribution, warehousing, and logistics centers throughout the country.

City of Houston Jobs See Yearly Improvement

Although there were fewer City of Houston jobs available at the beginning of this year, the local economy continues to improve on a yearly basis.

During January, the Houston area’s unemployment rate climbed to 8.8 percent, after dropping from 8.6 percent to 8.3 percent during December 2010. Despite the latest increase, however, the area’s rate was still lower than the national average at the time of 9 percent.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area employed a total of 2,532,100 workers during January, which is down from 2,567,200 workers during December. However, that’s a 2.3 percent increase from last year.
