Current State of Houston Job Market

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Although the rest of the country is considering biking to work in order to avoid paying astronomical gas prices, Houston’s economy is benefiting from all the dollars spent at the pump. With the energy industry providing 48 percent of Houston jobs, more money spent on fuel means more opportunities for those seeking work.

Whereas the rest of the country is experiencing rising unemployment, the city’s jobless rate remains relatively flat at 3.9 percent, a full 1.6 percent lower than the national average. The economic uncertainty that has caused employers throughout America to decrease the size of their staffs hasn’t seemed to touch Houston, where job growth is currently higher than 2 percentage points.

The Recession’s Impact on Finding Jobs Online

Friday, February 15th, 2008

At this point in time, whether or not Americans should be expecting an economic recession, driven by the mortgage crisis, is till up in the air. Sources backing up both opinions can be found. Some believe that Monster.com’s decrease in job listings during January is a sign that those seeking employment might struggle this year. Other’s blame the smaller number of available online jobs on seasonal issues. According to a new poll conducted by CareerBuilder.com, those looking for work can expect to see many new jobs created in 2008, just not as many as in the prior year.

The poll found that 33 percent of the employers who participated planned on increasing the size of their full-time staff this year. Although this is still a good increase, it certainly lower than the 40 percent in 2007 that said they were looking to add new employees to their payrolls. According to Bureau of Labor statistics, 1.3 million jobs were created in 2007. Matt Ferguson, chief executive of CareerBuilder.com, says that “looking forward, plans for hiring…point to continued job creation.”

Marketing, NotchUp Style

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

The newest buzz in the arena of online job searches has found a new home and a new strategy at the NotchUp website. But who really benefits from this site? Is it the employer, the job seeker, or just the site itself?

Notchup has an interesting sales strategy that has many people scratching their heads and wondering exactly how successful it will become.

For consumers, this site appears to present a huge array of opportunities that otherwise would not be available. The basic concept is that Notchup partners with major companies and corporations and facilitates a payment to individuals who choose to interview with them.

Yes, you heard that right. Notchup’s partners pay you to interview with them. All you do is upload your resume and profile, and the employers will be knocking down your door in no time! And they’ll be handing you money to boot!

At least that’s the concept.

There’s something a little confusing about this though – especially in today’s job market. Granted the job market is highly competitive. But the unemployment rate is also climbing as companies consolidate, and acquisitions force highly talented people out of the workforce every day. So why would companies pay you just to accept an interview with them?

Time will tell if this strategy works because it will quickly sweep the internet if it succeeds. While you’re waiting for your calls from Notchup, you might want to get a ‘notchup’ on the competition by dusting off your resume and proactively seeking opportunities where you want to work!

Time will tell who really benefits from Notchup.com.
