A new report found that a considerable number of Tampa jobs have been lost during the last year.
The report, from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, ranked Tampa Bay 20th among the top metro areas in the country to lose jobs. The city lost 56,000 jobs, or 4.6 percent, from August 2008 to August of this year.
During August, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 11.4 percent to 11.3 percent. However, that number is still higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.7 percent.
The Tampa area had a total non-farm employment of 1,162,600 workers during August, according to the BLS. This is up from 1,151,700 workers during July, but a 4.6 percent decrease from last year.
Of the largest 100 labor markets covered in the report, 99 had lost jobs during the 12-month period. As a group, the 100 markets lost more than 3.4 million jobs during the last year, making for a collective unemployment of 89.3 million, compared to 92.7 million last year.
Six markets lost at least 100,000 jobs during the year, led by Los Angeles and followed by Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, New York City and Phoenix. Detroit saw the biggest percentage decline, as 8.5 percent of the city’s jobs were lost during the year, followed by Phoenix, which saw a 7.9 percent job loss during the same period.
The only market that managed to gain jobs was the McAllen-Edinburg area in Texas, which is located close to the Mexican border. That area gained 3,200 jobs during August when compared to last year.
