Are Video Resumes Fair?

By admin | October 30, 2007

The latest trend in job search is video resumes.

Whether they are a fad or not, is to early to tell. One thing is certain, good looking people will fair well. But what about the not-so attractive, yet equally skilled people? Are video resumes fair?

Is it right to allow employers to view potential candidates before meeting them? Is it right for employers to be able to discard employees based on looks? Or the way they talk? Or what about the way they might use their hands? Employers think video resumes are great because it helps them cut down on time. Right away they can find confident, skilled employees that fit in.

That’s great for the good looking, well mannered, well spoken group of people out there. But what about people who don’t speak so well, who aren’t as great looking? Doesn’t this cut them out of the running?

Employers won’t admit that they hire on looks, but at We Attract.com, this website believes that attractive people mostly get hired over not so attractive people.

Are video resumes only good for attractive people? I don’t believe so. Video resumes are so new. That the fact that you have one, should get you the job. As long as you are professional and your video is professional, you are on your way.

Think about it, how many people do you know have a video resume? Come on, anyone? No. That’s because they are so new. When I was asked to research this topic, I was like, video what?

The fact that you have your own resume in video format is going to wow employers. Regardless of how you look or sound. That is as long as you look nice (wearing a suit), act confident and stick to business. Also when you speak you have to make sure you are clear. Whether this means talking slower, louder, or faster, it must be done. If employers can’t understand you, how are they going to hire you? By doing these things you can’t go wrong.

In today’s highly demanding employment market people need to think outside the box. Anything you can do to make yourself a bit different, to sparkle, you need to do. This makes you a risk taker, and more suitable candidate for an employer to hire. They know you are special, and they want you on their team. So go ahead and make yourself a video resume. You know you want that job.
