No new Wyoming government jobs will be created in the near future.
Gov. Dave Freudenthal recently announced that he is imposing a restriction on state agency hiring in response to declining revenue projections. Freudenthal also has ordered agencies to limit non-essential spending.
“Generally positions are not to be filled,” Freudenthal said in a press release. “There will be exceptions based on application from the agencies, primarily in areas related to public health and safety.”
Under Executive Order 2009 – 3, Freudenthal specified that agencies should not recruit for or fill any position vacancy, including at-will employee contract positions, without prior authorization from the Governor’s Office. He said he is also directing agencies to defer reclassifications and promotions.
Freudenthal also asked agencies to limit non-essential expenses such as travel, the purchase of supplies and equipment and contractual services. He further directed agencies to continue energy and resource conservation efforts to reduce utility expenses.
The Executive Order doesn’t apply to Wyoming’s community colleges, the University of Wyoming or the Judicial Department.
“In the spirit of cooperation and in recognition of our fiscal circumstances, I am requesting their cooperation to the extent possible,” Freudenthal added.
The State of Wyoming‘s government industry accounted for 71,100 jobs in Wyoming during February, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor statistics. This is up from 70,400 workers during January and a 4.4 percent increase from last year.
